Recipe | Kale Chips

Kale Chips

When I hang out with Brittany Hester,  she usually influences me to make healthy choices...or at least I think about healthy choices.  One night at dinner, I picked fried chicken + mashed potatoes and Brian and Ryne got chicken and waffles...Brittany chose grilled fish tacos.  She's a good example.

She was a great candidate for this cooking experiment.
I heard about kale chips via the Today show, reality tv, magazines, and blogs.
So I thought we should give them a try.

The ingredients:  kale, sea salt, olive oil or sunflower oil

Wash kale. Remove the stems/ribs.  Cut into small pieces.  Toss in oil and sprinkle with sea salt.

Bake in the oven at 275-300 degrees for about 20 minutes.  Turning halfway through.

Lessons learned:
1) Thoroughly dry the kale so it will crisp up.  (Maybe drag out the salad spinner)
2) Lightly sprinkle sea salt. You can always add more seasoning, but you can't take it away.
3) Kale baking in the oven = stinky (like cabbage or Brussels sprouts)... luckily it was at the Hesters' apartment. Sorry guys.
4) Kale chips aren't pretty. The crispy chips sacrifice prettiness!
4) Crispy, crunchy, salty...I could probably eat them again (but not nearly as tasty as unhealthy alternatives)

I think our thoughts went something like this...
Hannah: "Everyone has to try one piece!" (Enthusiasm might convince the boys try it)
Brian: "It's not real bad, but it's not real good."
Ryne: "Eww, what is that smell? One chip and I think I'm good."
Brittany: "Ooo, I like kale chips!"

  1. Haha -- this is great! Love the commentary! I feel like I've experienced this through you, making it unnecessary for me to actually make/eat them myself! So, thanks for that!

    1. Haha! I'm glad I could help you from making a stinky decision! Find a friend and borrow their kitchen. The Hesters said it took a few days and candles to help their little apartment! :)
